Definition and Examples of the Present Progressive Tense In  English grammar,  the present progressive is a  verb  construction (made up of a present form of the verb  to be  plus a  present participle) that usually conveys a sense of ongoing action at the present time. This construction is also known as the durative aspect. The present progressive is used to describe activity that is in progress right nows of the present progressive can also be found in cases where a speaker is referring to things that are planned for the future, e.g., I am reading at the event tomorrow. Cambridge University Press, 2006) The Present Progressive Is Not Passive Voice Students of English are frequently taught to improve their prose by removing passive language, i.e., sentences where the object of an action appears as the main subject (The pins were knocked over by the bowling ball). Passive language introduces be verbs (were  knocked over) that would not appear if the original sentence had been written actively (The bowling ball knocked over the pins). For this reason, some students learn to become wary of be verbs, thinking they are indicators of passive language. This is not always the case. The present progressive tense- a construction that always includes a be verb- should not be confused with passive voice. Present Progressive Examples The best way to get a sense of how the present progressive is used is to look at examples that appear in books, movies, and common speech. Take the following example, from Amy Reeds 2009 novel Beautiful: I am looking at my piece of pizza. I am watching pepperoni glisten. It is my third day at the new school and I am sitting at a table next to the bathrooms. I am eating lunch with the blond girls with the pink sweaters, the girls who talk incessantly about Harvard even though were only in the seventh grade. Here the present progressive is used to describe a series of actions (looking, sitting, eating) that are all occurring in the same present moment. The use of this tense not only unites these actions but also provides a sense of immediacy, grounding the reader in the present. The present progressive can also be used to describe actions that are habitual or regular or true across time: People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. This quote, from George Bernard Shaw, uses the present progressive to show that blame is always being assigned, from generation to generation, a symptom of human nature that will never change. Finally, the present progressive can also be used to refer to planned actions. In her novel Notting Hell, Rachel Johnson describes a host telling her guests whats for dinner: Anyway, tonight, we  are having  a perfectly balanced supper of fish fingers (essential fatty fish oils), baked beans (lovely roughage) and oven chips (bursting with potato goodness). Present Progressive vs. Simple Present The present progressive tense can be confusing, especially for English learners whose native language does not use this tense. In The Business Writers Handbook, Gerald J. Alred provides the following example: I am searching for an error in the document.[The search is occurring now and may continue.] In contrast, the simple present tense more often relates to habitual actions: I search for errors in my documents.[I regularly search for errors, but I am not necessarily searching now.]   Alred gives another example to provide a further distinction: I live in London.I am living in London. The sense of the first sentence  is that this is a relatively permanent state of affairs- there is no suggestion that the speaker is intending to leave any time soon. He is an extremely lonely man and probably the loneliest in the novel due to his complexion. He is treated by the others in a rude manner and is left sitting in his little room helpless with an uncomfortable bed which makes his back worse. This is how he reacted to the treatment he was getting, but in the end he was quiet a nice guy to know. Curleys Wife is a very lonely woman who wears red mules, has red fingernails, full rouged lips and hair rolled in clusters. She has no name throughout the entire book to reinforce how insignificant a person she is. Her life with her husband was nothing to do with loving each other because she didnt even like Curley because he was not a nice bloke. The quote on page 87 Coulda been in the movies, an had nice clothes tells us that her ambition was to become an actor. In the end she ended up being murdered by Lennie after trying to become his friend. George and Lennie, although unhappy at times, are not lonely, because they share a very close bond with each other, and have traveled together ever since Lennies Aunt Clara died. The only thing that seems to keep them working for next to nothing is the thought of owning their own ranch someday. In the final chapter Lennie states triumphantly on page 103 An I got you. We got each other, thats what, that gives a hoot in hell about us. In the end George felt he had to shoot Lennie himself, so that he would die instantly, rather than suffer as Curley killed him slowly and painfully. Lennies murder was Georges final act of friendship. But it also ended their long friendship and now George would be lonely as he traveled around from job to job. In conclusion the loneliest people in this story are Crooks, Candy and Curleys Wife. The friendship between George and Lennie was a strong bond all throughout the story, but it all ended when tragically George shot Lennie because he could no longer protect him any further.

This means that management has searched the organization and its environment for opportunities and initiated projects and decisions to bring about changes that are both advantageous and competitive for the organization. These same HR policies had to be turned into practices that were used by both managers and employees as part of their everyday work. Which primarily creates a better-trained, more flexible workforce that will add more to the bottom line. Peoples’ Bank went through some organizational restructuring in order to stay competitive in the market. As a result of the changes that were made in the Bank’s System, HR Management had to do research and analysis in order to scan the banks new environment to see what types of employees would be needed with the â€Å"new strategy’s skill and organizational requirements. This was a use of HR’s information management skills, which was followed by HR’s integration and change skills to manage the organizational interfaces, assess the organizations skills (or the curren t values of the banks human resource investment), set priorities, anticipate the future, and facilitate the changes. This is an excellent example of HR Management’s role being at every level of the strategic planning process. At Peoples’ Bank, â€Å"massive changes began to take place in the business environment of banking with deregulation and the relaxation of ceilings on interest†. This affected what people actually did with their money and where they actually put their money; and these two factors affected the whole money market system of banking. This especially affected the competition between the different levels of banks (regional, district, and local) for various (but the same) sources of funds.

Implementing Strategic Change: Monica Ashley’s Experience â€Å"The Monica Ashley Case† illustrates a very conclusive example of how the correct use of power and influence in management is as important as, and sometimes even more important than, having all the right answers and being able to back them up with data. Power struggle, influence, politics, and resistance are all issues within this case study. It also prozides an example that witin project management it is essential to determine the key players, figure out what is important to them and utilize strategic management skills to influence the project. Monica Ashley, a highly driven and ambitious woman was the project manager of â€Å"Project Hippocrates† at HEAL-INC. She had individual power to use the company’s resources and people to accomplish job related tasks and duties. She initially had concerns about taking on the position however, with the personal encouragement and backing by the president of the company, Gary Dorr, she accepted. As the project manager, Monica had access and control over information such as reporting and data supporting the idea of purchasing a digital signal processor from an outside vendor. She also had information about the changes of customer needs and the competitor’s reactions to the changes. Therefore, her colleagues needed to depend on her to solve some of the problems they faced. This gave Monica information power. Although Monica had information power there were several types of power she was missing. Monica lacked reward power and coercive power. She couldn’t give monetary bonuses, promotions or any other form of rewards to colleagues who had done well in the project. More importantly, Monica didn’t have the power to punish anyone who hurt team morale and obstructed the progress of the project by engaging in organizational politics, such as Ralph Parker and Ed Kane. Monica had several years experience in important staff positions, which helped her in transferring her knowledge to this project however she lacked expert power. She didn’t have the expertise in designing and manufacturing of signal processors before taking up the project. She was relatively inexperienced when compared with Parker and she had neither made major contribution to the company nor built close relationship with her olleagues. Her colleagues also less respected her than Parker who had high informal individual power including expert power because of his expertise in analog signal processors. Parker was the vice president of signal processor design, and he believed that he was the only person that could specify the type of processor (analog or digital) to be used in the project. On occasion he discredited Monicas research and stated that it â€Å"wasn’t competant†. Monica chose not to align with Parker and rather continue on her track to comlete the project the best way she saw fit. Monica had legitimate power on the project with her team however she lacked with senior management. Dorr valued a â€Å"peaceful and productive environment† with no â€Å"hot competitors†. Based on her prior converstaion with Dorr it seemed he valued the teamwork aspect more than the expert power. Dorr was frustrated with her thinking that she had legitimate power and described her as â€Å"an Imperial Chinese Emperor. † Parker questioned her legitimate power when he shouted: â€Å"Who the hell do you think you are, going to an outside vendor. † Parker throughout the case used coercive power to intimidate Monica. He taunted her by calling her a â€Å"traitor and a renegade. † The power used by Parker to influence Dorr was not discussed in the case since most of their interaction happened behind closed doors. Though, whatever power used, it surely was more effective than that of Monica. Parker knew how to play the political game, while Monica thought that her numbers and data are going to be enough to get her targets’ buy in. Monica’s influence tactics relied heavily on rational persuasion. Before the Hippocrates project she used this rational persuasion successfully to influence Dorr. She backed up â€Å"her views with data when he (Dorr) asked why she disagreed. † Monica’s attempt to use rational persuasion during project Hippocrates did not yield the same positive results. On the other hand, Parker and Kane knew how to â€Å"play the game† at HEAL-INC. While Monica stuck to one tactic using data and information, Parker and Kane used several tactics in an attempt to influence their targets. This included pressure and time spent forming a coalition. Pressure was exerted on Monica, and she â€Å"ate the bait† and appeared to fight back. Monicas appearance to fight back worked against her since managers are expected to exert self-control. Behind closed doors, Parker and Kane brought Dorr to their side of the argument and used this coalition to marginalize Monica’s proposal. Eventually near the conclusion of the project Monica was removed from her position. Monica realized that she was too caught up in the technical and marketing challenges and she did not focus on assessing the interests of other key players. She had data and content for the project but lacked a foundation because she did not align with others. Her manager, Dan Stella, tried to coach Monica to be more influential but he couldn’t get her to listen to his advice. This proved to be an obstacle for her because when challenged by others Stella did not publically back her up. Stella had a lot at stake for his position in the company and therefore had to look out for himself. Monica also never addressed issues with Parker. She took her coworkers views of Parker as facts and did not bother to talk to him directly. Monica should have taken the opportunity to talk to Parker out of the context of presentations and possibly even work and learn more about him. The goal of meeting with Parker would have enabled her to build trust and rapport with him. She should have also worked actively on finding ways to include Parker in the decision making process. By including others in the project should would have encouraged positive input and perhaps eliminated behind-the-scenes maneuvering. In regards to Stella, rather than viewing his concerns as negative she needed to step back and reassess why he was coaching her. Stella was an invaluable alliance that she should have fostered and recognized. She should have given him the promise of more controlled behavior and listening to his advice, in turn he may have been more willing to publically support her. Monica also made mistakes with Dorr. She went head on with Parker even though Dorr specifically told her not to do so. Her intensity rather than patience and teamwork concerned Dorr. She didn’t do enough talking with Dorr about the project rather provided information in a public setting. The project required Dorr’s support and she did not align with him to build a strong foundation. This misjudgement proved to be a major weakness for Monica. She harmed an opportunity that provided her direct contact with the President of the company, a contact that senior managers should embrace. In order to be more infulential in the future, Monica needs to avoid heavily relying on just the merit of her work and viewing politics with distaste. The â€Å"numbers† are not the only focus for senior management. Effective managers need to also have self-control and show a perception of being team players. Monica needs to work on her relationship with her peers and superiors at HEAL-INC. This includes reaching out to the President Gary Dorr, her boss Dan Stella and last but not least Parker and Kane. In addition to that Monica needs to adapt her influence style. Going forward, she needs to recognize the influence of others and build trusting relationships with the key players involved. Review of the Disabled in the United Kingdom

Society, in general, has been developed to accommodate the able bodied. The consequence is that dependency is automatically associated with the disabled. As such, the disabled are expected to merge seamlessly with a society that has been designed for and by the physically sound. To effect this integration, the disabled are provided with numerous rights and privileges. However, several of these provisions are difficult to access for a disabled person.In general, the disabled are regarded as acquiescent and thankful patrons and not as regular clients, endowed with responsibilities and privileges (Stevenson, 2001. P. 169). The disabled have consistently, contested subjugation and demanded incorporation into mainstream society with dignity. Such people have demonstrated their administrative capacity, as is evidenced by the fact that the British Deaf Association and the National League for the Blind had been headed and administered by the disabled.These organizations had initiated campaig ns for obtaining rights for the disabled in the 1890’s (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). With the advent of the 1980’s, the disabled have continually enhanced their presence, and have in the process, emerged as an important segment of society. The United Kingdom was witness to quite a few protests, which served to increase the awareness of the general public regarding the plight of the disabled. Notable among such protests were those that had been conducted by the Disability Action Network (Marks, 1999. P. 3).Moreover, within the UK, organizations like the British Council of Disabled People have proved to be very effective in substantially mitigating the seclusion of and enhancing the self respect of the disabled. A similar task, at the international level, had been carried out by organizations like The Disabled People’s International (Marks, 1999. P. 3). The act of viewing disability, purely from the perspective of a physician, served to sideline the social s ignificance of this problem. In fact in the 1970’s, a child diagnosed with the Down’s syndrome would have been considered incapable of being educated.All this has changed and at present, several such pupils are permitted to attend regular school and take the usual seven to eight GCSE’s. Moreover, there is no segregation by their peers (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). The 1920’s saw a dramatic increase in the number of disabled persons, due to the advent of disabled veterans. Several protest measures were adopted, all over Britain, to bring in legislation to uphold the rights of the disabled. The outcome of these protests was the enactment of the Disabled Persons Act in 1944, which allowed for a three percent reservation in jobs.The 1995 Disability Discrimination Act rescinded this reservation, it is unfortunate, that the disabled are deemed to be a burden on society (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). It is essential to impose restrictive measures on t he able bodied, although, only to a limited extent, in order to accord similar access to the disabled. The Disability Discrimination Act is the culmination of a protracted struggle to implement the rights of the disabled. It was enacted on the 8th of November 1995.In the year 1999, the UK parliament enacted the Disability Rights Commission Act, which brought into being the Disability Rights Commission. Two major goals of this commission are to ensure equal opportunity and to prevent discrimination, Vis – a – Vis the disabled. However, from the 1st of October, 2007 these objectives have become the duty of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (The Disability Rights Commission , 2007). Under the Disability Discrimination Act, the employer is under an obligation to make reasonable changes to the workplace, in order to make it conducive for a disabled person to work effectively.Moreover, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, specifies guidelines to determine the rea sonableness of modifications to be made in the workplace (Employment rights and the Disability Discrimination Act). Some of the cases, in which the tenets of the Disability Discrimination Act had not been adhered to, are discussed in the sequel. In Vernon v. Roper, the golf club had refused the appellant to use a motorized golf cart. The court opined that it was incumbent upon the golf club to make such provisions as would have made it conducive for the appellant to avail himself of the club’s facilities (Lawson & Gooding, 2005.P. 153). In Glover v. Hannah’s cafe, the claimant had a specially trained dog that helped him to find his way, as he was blind. In addition, to his blindness, he had also been afflicted with diabetes. He was prevented from entering Hannah’s cafà ©, to obtain a snack for maintaining his blood sugar level, because of the dog accompanying him. The court took strong exception to this callous act of the restaurant staff and awarded exemplary damages (Glover v. Hannah' Cafe, 2003).The UN General Assembly adopted The International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities, on the 13th December 2006. This convention would bring considerable pressure to bear upon countries that do not adequately protect the rights of the disabled. Moreover, the countries, which ratify this convention, have to perforce, submit periodic reports regarding the progress made by them in protecting and promoting such rights (International disability rights and the UN Convention).Despite the aforementioned pieces of legislation, disabled people in the UK are highly underprivileged. They remain unemployed for longer durations than their able bodied counterparts. In addition, the disabled obtain lower wages. However, the government takes disability issues very seriously, as is evidenced by the fact that the annual expenditure incurred in this context is to the tune of  £ 19 billion (Giddens, 2 006. P. 288).
